vCenter Converter error deploying agent

A week ago my collegue had a problem for p2v a machine. When she started the vConverter task from the vCenter after she compiled the form for IP, User and Pass the server reported an error: Cannot connect to the machine.

After some checks I found the problem: the vCenter server cannot connect to the machine for Domain trust problem. I suggested to my collegue to install manually the vConverter Agent on the machine and than the vConverter server can scan the data and the P2V worked fine.

The vConverter Agent is in this path "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter"
and the file has this name so explicit "VMware-Converter-Agent.exe"

Change PSP to RoundRobind by script in vMA

A weeks ago I saw this post on the Duncan Epping's blog(a very nice virtualization blog)!
I also use a script to change the PSP on my environment, but I start to use vMA for a repository of the script and cmd line maintenance of the ESX. Ok for now I'll continue to use the ESX and not the ESXi, but the future is ESXi and vMA.

I write this script for change the PSP

I connect to the server, than I change the default PSP fot the satp of the EMC VMAX SAN and than I chnage the PSP for all the device.

For the script you need to have all the server added to the vifp db than you can run the script with the name of the server.

Disclaimer: This script is for education pourposes. It function correctly for my environment, but test it on a lab environment before you use in production.

Yesterday arrived me the result of the exam VDCA410. I pass it!!!!

For study it I used the Sean Crookston VCAP page. Very thank you!

For the exam I just tell you that the exam is not simple. Try all the thing in a lab if you don't have a real life experience, and than feel comfortable when you take the exam.

Hi all,
I'm studying for the VCAP-DCA exam, and I have a LAB.

My lab is a HP DC7800P with 6 GB of RAM and ESX4.1 for the core. Inside I run some Vm like 2ESXi and vCenter.
Today I want to start the VM from the cmd line.... but where is vmware-cmd???

In ESXi you need to enable TSM, then login through a SSH client like putty or term in Mac OSX then with thsi command you have the list of the vm

# vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms

is the equal of vmware-cmd -l
and than with the VMID you can run this command

vim-cmd vmsvc/power.on VMID

NFS and VMware ESX

Who use a Linux machine as a repository for vmware?
I try it for a LAB environment. I create a LVM logical volume and than I share it through NFS. I connect it to the ESX and than I try to create a VM. On NFS datastore you cannot create a thin disk, but just thick disk!
I use RedHat Ent 5.5 with local disk formatted in ext3 filesystem.

I create a machine with 4GB HDU and all goes fine. Than I want to create a 40GB vm: Error.!
Oh.....
What's that?

After a little brain storming with me and I.... I find the problem: I create the ext3 filesystem with the default block size : mke2fs -j /dev/...
With this command the filesistem use the default block size 1024 and a max file size 16GB. A VM with a 16GB hdu is too little.

For resolution I reformat the filesystem with the command mke2fs -b 4096 -j /dev/... and now I can create a file of 2TB!!!

Remember the option when you want a repository for a VM.

vCli 4.1 new command

Yeterday I tryed some cmmand on the vMA appliance for my study to the VCAP certification.

I Added the test vCenter with vifp addserver and than I want to list the client inside the Virtual Center. The response is here vicfg-hostops -o info --viserver vservertest and it returns the list of the ESX! Great!

On this document I find another great think of vMA for the migration from ESX to ESXi! The ability to kill an hung vm from the cmdline: now with the esxcli vms vm kill you can kill a vm that don't respond from the gui! Very Nice!

Next I ran this command to create the NFS export on the vdm –

vRanger 4.5.3 backup issue after upgrade to vSphere 4.1

Hi All,

last week I upgrade our production farm to vSphere 4.1 ESX, not ESXi.
After the upgrade I reenable the root login over ssh and reenter the credential on the vRanger console for the ESX.

All the backup on 3 of the 5 esx in the cluster fails with this errorFailed to acquire vm lock /vmfs/volumes/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xxxxxxxxxxxx242/.vzmutex due to an SSH connection issue.

After some tricks and reserch I found this article that helps me to resolve the issue.

On the 3 esx with the error I remove the direcotry .vzbin under /tmp and than the backup goes fine.

This morning I read 2 post about the virtualization of an existing Domain Controller.

The post are these:

My opinion and my experience says that is more simple and secure deploy a new vm and that promote it to a DC, attend the replication process, move the FSMO roles and after all demote the old DC.

Here the release notes of the new vmware Converter Stanalone. Thee news are the support for vSphere 4.1 and win 2008 R2 for guest, but the bad news is the installation on linux as server is disappered!

Strange vmdk disk error

Hi all,
yesterday I had a strange vmdk/LUN failure over an ESX 4 U1.
The vm is a file server with 2 hard disk: 1 for the OS of 10GB and 1 for the data of 300GB. The disk was in thock mode and the vm was the only stored on a LUN of 350GB! You say " OK The LUN has much space for that VM!".

I say: NO! the Lun fills up all the space and the vm goes down! When I received the alarm on the LUN there was only 2Mb of free space!!
The problem was on the second hard disk. It was divided on more subdisk like a snapshot, but there was no snapshot. The other mistake was the provisioned space: the disk was thick so the space provisioned was the same, but see the image below

I search over the kb in vmware and I find 2 article for the solution.
The first is abount the snapshot and the second is about the child disk.

The second article help me to the solution. I cloned the hdu with vmkfstools -i on another LUN and than I change the configuration of the vm adding the new disk instead of the old big hdu!
It was a long time waititng answer! to clone the hdu it takes about 5 hours over a SAN!

Strange network issue on FCoE environment

Hi all,
on this month I and my collegues migrate all the virtual infrastructure from EMC CX Clariion SAN to EMC Symmetrix VMAX SAN. On the ESX there was 2 CNA adapter:
- QLogic 8042
- Emulex LP21002
All the 2 interface for the network emulates an 82598EB 10Gigabit AF Dual port. The CNA are connected to Cisco Nexus 5020 switch. For the migration we create a new vSwitch whit all the portgroup and the emulex network for the physical adapter. The issue is the vm not connected to the network after a vmotion. With VMware and many stress test we found that the vm after a vmotion did't make an arp request for register the MAC to the new esx host, so the vm is connected to the virtual switch and another vm on the same esx and portgroup can ping it, but all the physical world can't ping it.

After many task we make a dirty solution: remove the QLOGIC CNA and make all the connection with the EMULEX card. This is the solution for our case! take attention for your environment! make many test and speack with vmware and log, log, log!

After a little reserch over the vmware kb I find this result:

The response is for the name resolution: I write the ip of my esx on the /etc/hosts of the vDR aplliance and all goes fine.

Win 7 nice desktop user support tool

Today I use the new tool for win 7 psr.exe Problem Step Recorder. This tool is user from a desktop user for replicate the error and the tool record the action. After it the tool make a file with all the operation and the error code. You simply recive the mail and read what the user does and you save your ears and your brain from the mobile phone!!!

WinPE 3 and VMware driver

Today I create a new version on my personal resource kit of the WinPE CD. I use WAIK for Win 2008 R2 and Win 7.

I install it on a server Win 2008 R2 inside a virtual machine.
I just go thru the guide. I use the following command for the creation of the image

- copype.cmd x86 c:\winpex86
- copy c:\winpex86\winpe.wim c:\winpex86\ISO\sources\boot.wim
- Dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:C:\winpex86\ISO\sources\boot.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\winpex86\mount
Add the driver from the vmware tools directory
- Dism /image:C:\winpex86\mount /Add-Driver /driver:"C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers" /recurse
Dismount the image and save the change
- Dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:C:\winpex86\mount\ /Commit
Create the ISO Image
- Oscdimg -n -bC:\winpex86\etfsboot.com C:\winpex86\ISO C:\winpex86\winpex86.iso

Dism is the new tool that comes with Win 7 and Win 2008 R2 and is used to manipulate WIM Image.

Now I turn on a VM with the iso image attached to the cdrom.

The VM has a Network card VMXNET3

and after the boot win winpe I can use it

This is useful because you can also use it with WDS (Windows Deployment Service= and create a custom image with the vmware drivers!

Win 2008 R2 VM with PVSCSI boot controller in vSphere 4U1

Today I install a new VM in my test lan. I want to try the new features of the PVSCSI adapter also for boot disk. I install it on my ESXi machine. The creation of the vm is quite simple like next,next...
After power on the VM Win2008 disk don't find any disk for the installation

To load the driver for the disk I use the floppy image connecting the floppy device

and than I select the driver from the Windows installation program

After that I continued the installation until the OS reboots.
On the first boot I install the VMware Tools for all the driver.

That's all.

Just a little tips
The first time that I want to find the directory /vmimages in the Datastore I don't fint it! I log in over SSH and than I make a Simbolic link from the datastore directory to the original directory with this command
datastore# ln -s /vmimages vmimages
I think is a problem with ESXi. I don't have a ESX machine for check this issue. After the link I can connect the floppy image and all goes fine.

Partition alignment VMFS and VM

I want to take a bookmark for the article that I find on the web for the partition alignment.

For VMFS partition when you create a partition with the VI client or the vCenter the partition in alignment itself, but if you create the partition with the cmd line (ESX) in the COS the partition is not alignment. For the alignment you need to make some othe command when you are in the fdisk tool. after you create the partition whit the n command you need to change the type of the partition (fd for vmware filesystem) and than use the X command and set the start of the partition; 128 is the value for the most cases, but check the SAN manual for the best configuration. Then you can create the vmfs filesystem on that partition with this command Example: vmkfstools -C vmfs3 /vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba0:0:0:10

Upon the VMFS there are the VM and the vmdk file: The VM disk: for this there are a difference from windows to linux configuration.

For windows before win 2008 server you need to make the alignment by hand with diskpart.exe. Here an article that explain how to create also a Windows boot disk alignment. There is a Microsoft Technet article that explain how to verify the alignment of the partition.
This is an article that expalin how to create the volume and than format it in an alignment state. It refers to Exchange but is a standard for all the product, also for SQL. Other link of this kind are:

For running 32 bit application on win 2008 r2 core you need to enable the 32 bit support.

use this command

On the full Win 2008 r2 server the WOW64 susystem is enable in the default mode.

ESXi now supports the Jumbo Frame on the VMKernel Network! Not from now but also in the past. The alarm is just an error on the documentation and many blogs like this expand the notice. Now the ESXi blog says that was just an error in the documetation and you can turn on jumbo frame on the VMKernel Network.

It's a very good news for the free version of the vSphere suite.

Upgrade ESX3.5 tu vSphere 4.01

Monday I upgraded one ESX 3.5 host to vSphere 4 Update 1 with Host Update Utility: All OK.
The host was an IBM X3650 with local storage. The only issue that I find is the management station that can't upgrade the client inside. The station is a old Win2000 server with a fax server software. When I tried to install the client this message appeared

I used another client for the management.

XenDesktop vs View

Today I try the new VDI solution for the two competitors.
For my opinion the Citrix XenDesktop product is a more advanced solution and have more features than Vmware View. First of all the client for the VDI on Xenserver is for all the OS client(Windows, Linux and Mac) instead View client that is only for Windows.
The server is more clean adn linear. I prefer the console of xendestop instead the Web interface of view.

I use for ESX server for the Hypervisor for the VDI VM. For connecting XenDesktop DDC to the vCenter and ESX I disable the SSL authentication for the /sdk access on the Tomcat server. I use this guide. I try the client on WinXP and on Ubuntu 9.10 and is all fine!

For View i use Win2003 for the Brocker and the client is a WinXp machine.

Ho provato le soluzioni VDI di Citrix e Vmware. Mi è piaciuta maggiormante la versione di citrix in quantop il client è multipiattaforma (windows,linux e Mac) e il server con la sua console mi è sembrato più lineare e "pulito".

Per il lab ho usato ESX come server di virtualizzazione. Per collegare ESX a xendesktop ho usato l'articolo sopra citato per collegarli senza usare SSL sulla partizione /sdk del tomcat server di vCenter.

Today I downlaod and install the new version of vSphere. The new version has support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 32 and 64 bit. It resolvs also the bug for the client inside this os. The release notes is here. Some new features are the Paravirtual SCSI Adapter supported for boot on Win2003 and win 2008 VM, Win 2008 R2 and Win 7 officially supported and the support for View 4! Also released vCenter update. The new features is DB2 support.

Oggi è stato rilascita la nuova versione di vSphere. Supporto ufficiale per Win 7 e Win 2008 R2. Risolto anche il problema per il client all'interno di questi SO. Aggiornamento anche per vCenter che adesso supporta anche DB2 come DB. DB2 era presente nella beta, tolto nella prima versione e ripristinato adesso con questo upgrade. Durante il corso What's New che ho seguito a Milano l'istruttore ci disse che nella fase di beta del corso c'era DB", ma poi era stato tolto e anche nelle domande per la certificazione erano presenti soltanto Oracle e SQl Server.

VMware Virtualization Day

On tuesday 17 I went to Virtualization Day on Milan. In the morning VmWare present vSphere and some package for vCenter and the new View. For the presentation they used a Laptop with an client hypervisor for the raod warrior (offline user). This laptop is a technical preview for the vmware technical guy. The ESX for laptop is capable to use wifi adapter and a new driver for VGA adapter whit 3D. They shown a Win 7 VM with Aero.

After the break I saw an IBM presentation. The speaker was Massimo Rè Ferre a virtualization guru. The presentation was a very good overview for the cloud technology key point and concept and a presentatione for the IBM Blade server S(an all in one solution for virtualization purpose). Thanks Massimo for your opinion and idea. I I hope that Massimo will publish the presentation on his blog!

L'atro ieri sono andato a Milano per il Vmware Virtualization Day. Nella mattinata è stato presentato oltre a vSphere e vari parti e aggiunte per vCenter è stato presentato View. Il prodotto per il VDI di Vmware. Oltre al client Windows PCoIP i tecnici hanno fatto vedere un portatile che è una technical preview con sopra un ESX per portatili... Quando fa il boot permette di scegliere le VM streemmate all'interno dall'amministratore di sistema e quando partono sono totalmete libere di usare tutte le periferiche del portatile comprese schede video 3D e rete wifi.

Al pomeriggio ho assistito ad una presentazione IBM di Massimo Rè Ferre. Veramente ben fatta con concetti chiave sul cloud e sostanza per implementare soluzioni di DR riviste per semplificare e non risolvere per forza con prodotti strillati! Complimenti a Massimo!

Oggi ho passato l'esame VCP 410 su vSphere. Pensavo fosse più difficile. Per le risorse ho usato i link di sopra he mi hanno aiutato oltre ai pdf ufficiali del sito di vmware.

Ho anche usato un laboratorio virtuale: una macchina con ESXi4 con sopra installati
- 2 ESX4
- 1 Win2003 con vCenter
- 1 Win 2008 come AD Domain controller
e per lo storage ho installato sul mio portatile una vm con Openfiler su vmware workstation per la SAN iSCSI. Grazie a questo minilaboratorio e alla licenza demo di 60 giorni sono riuscito ad effettuare le prove per il cluster.

Novità in casa Vmware per i prodotti Desktop: sono usciti il nuovo Player alla versione 3, la nuova workstation alla versione 7 e il nuovo Fusion per gli utenti MAC. Segnalo solo la novità più interessante per me che faccio i test con ESX: il supporto nativo a creare una vm con ESX/i installato all'interno della workstation.
Nel Player la novità più grande è la possibilità di creare le VM!

Esame 70-236

Oggi mi è arrivata la conferma del superamente dell'esame 70-236 relativo ad Exchange 2007.

A dispetto della data si vede che l'esame era pensato per l'infrastruttura su win 2003 e non sull'attuale win 2008. Infatti nemmeno una domanda con win 2008. Aspettiamo Exchange 2010 per le novità.

vSphere ESXi e riga di comando

A volte trovo utile usare la riga di comando per far partire una vm dentro un host ESX. Se si utilizza ESX o vSphere il comando è vmware-cmd con le varie opzioni dentro alla Service Console.
Questa mattina mi è venuto un lampo: e per ESXi che non ha la SC che faccio???

La risposta è ovvia: installo il vSphere CLI che mi permettono di lanciare i comandi direttamente dal mio pc per effettuare le stesse operazioni sul mio host ESX.

I comandi sono degli script in Perl che si collegano in remoto all'ESX. Sono supportate le versioni ESX dalle 3.5U2 in poi.

qui un piccolo esempio che ho fatto sulla mia macchina di test con ESXi 4

controllo la lista delle vm presenti

e faccio il poweron di una vm

La differenza del farlo dall SC è che nel comando dal pc si deve impostare il parametro --server IP per indicare su quale server eseguire l'operazione e poi vengono richieste le credenziali per collegarsi al host.

Si può fare anche tramite powershell, ma questo alla prossima puntata.

Windows 2000 Server e Windows Server 2003

In questo post viene spiegato che Win 2000 terminerà la sua estensione di supporto il 13 luglio 2010. Questo vuol dire che non si avranno più aggiornamenti o altro.

Per Windows 2003 server e R2 la SP2 sarà l'ultima Service Pack disponibile, quindi niente SP3.

Recovery VMFS volumes

Partendo da questo post letto sul blog di Luca che ho conosciuto ad un corso vmware mi sono incuriosito e ho trovato questi driver che mi erano letteralmente sfuggiti.

Ho fatto alcune prove: Installato una macchina ESXi dentro una macchina virtuale. Ho poi trasferito una VM guest all interno del Datastore e poi ho riavviato la macchina con un live CD Knoppix 6.1. Verificando tramite fdisk -l sul HDU mi ritrovo una bella mpartizione sconosciuta per linux con ID fb.

Ma scaricati i tool e lanciato il DIR mi ha fatto vedere ...

Sicurmanete è un inizio, ma mplto promettente...

vSphere client on Windows 7

Oggi ho aggiornato il mio portatile a Windows 7 Ultimate. Ho provveduto ad installare tutte le utility che uso di solito, ma un programma mi ha dato qualche noia:

il client di vSphere si installa correttamente, ma al momento di farlo partire riporta i seguenti errori

Error Parsing the server "192.168.1.10" "clients.xml" file Login will continue contact your system administrator

e premendo il classico invio

The type initializer for "VirtualInfrastrcture.Utils.HttpWebRequestProxy" threw an exception

nuovo invio e fine del gioco.

Cercando sul forum di vmware ho trovato questo link che spiega il problema relativo alla versione di .Net 3.5 inserita in Win 7. Da anche 2 possibili soluzioni:

Eseguire il client in WinXp compatibily mode, soluzione un po' "pesante", e recuperare il file System.dll da una macchina non win 7 con il .Net 3.5 Sp1 e impostare tramite la chiave al valore il file . config del vpxclient.

Oltre a questo si deve anche impostare una variabile di ambiente (io l'ho fatto solo per l'utente e non per il sistema) DEVPATH e farla puntare nel percorso dove si copia il file system.dll.

Fatto questo il client funziona correttamente.

Nota: Il cliente per ESX 3.5 funziona correttamente senza trick.

Problema .NET 2.0

Oggi ho avuto un problema con il Framework .Net 2.0. Dal cliente c'è un applicazione montata che sfrutta il .net 2.0, ma sulla macchina in particolare erano attivi gli aggiornamenti automatici. Il passaggio alla versione 3.5 del .net creava il blocco dell'applicativo. Soluzione facile: reinstallare il .net 2.0, ma qui sta l'inghippo:

L'installare si bloccava con un errore di una funzione per Handle non valida e non permetteva di continuare.

Allora vado a disinstalalre il .net 3.5 e poi reinstallo il 2. Nell'installazione applicazioni era presente soltanto il .net 1.1 e nessuna versione successiva, anche se andando nella cartella windows\microsoft.net era presente anche la cartella della versione 2.0.

per risolvere il problema googlando ho trovato questa bellissima utility che forza il cleanup della versione di .net desiderata. Grazie aaron Stebnet per l'utility!

infatti appena ripulito il sistema dalle versioni incriminate ho rilanciato il setup e questa volta è andato a posto.

Windows Server 2008 R2 e Migrazione

Ciao a tutti.

Ho seguito un mini preview del nuovo Windows Server 2008 R2 e tra le novità è stato inserita una nuova funzionalità per facilitare la migrazione di alcuni ruoli da un vecchio server al nuovo. A questo indirizzo sono presenti le guide e i ruoli a i quali si applica. Quello sicuramente più importante, ma anche preoccupante, è il ruolo di AD e DNS, oltre che file e pèrint server. Microsoft punta a rendere semplice e snella la procedura, anche se a mio avviso senza le conoscenze giuste si rischi di entrare in un buco nero creando non pochi problemi all'infrastruttura di rete.

Vedremi gli sviluppi.

Aggiornamento host ESX 3.5 a vSphere

Oggi ho fatto alcune prove per passare da un host esx 3.5 alla versione nuova vSphere. Per mantenere i dati si deve utilizzare il programma vSphere Host update utility 4.0 per il singolo host oppure il patch manager se si utilizza vCenter.

Il programma richiede che l'host sia in modalita Maintenance Mode, quindi si deve poi procedere allo spegnimento di tutte le macchine virtuali. Fatto questo si aggangia il server ESX dal programma di aggiornamento e tramite un wizard gli si dà in pasto la ISO di vSphere. Il programma si occupa di aggiornare il server riavviandolo e mantenendo i datastore anche locali.

La cosa bella è che permette sempre di partire anche con la versione vecchia di ESX.

MCITP Enterprice Administrator 2008

Dopo aver passato gli esami 70-620 su Vista e il 70-647 su Windows Server 2008 mi è arrivata via mail la comunicazione di essere MCITP Enterprice Administrator.
Sono stati sei mesi duri, ma adesso è arrivata un po' di gratificazione. Adesso un po' di vacanza e poi vedremo che direzione intraprendere.

ESX inside ESX o meglio vSphere dentro vSphere. In quseto post viene mostrato come installare la nuova versione di ESX all'interno di una macchina virtuale. Questa configurazione si può utilizzare per verificare le configurazioni o le fattibilità di un progetto. Prima diq uesta rivoluzione con alcuni accrocchi era possibile installare la versione ESX 3.5 all'interno di una macchina virtuale che però era ospitata all'interno di vmware Workstation, quindi con molte limitazioni. Ora non ci resta che aspettareil 21 maggio per il download di questa versione.

Windows Xp e Windows 7

Leggo da questo post di Pier Giorgio Malusardi che su win 7 ci sarà una modalità di compatibilità molto particolare che deriva dalla struttura che Microsoft sta spingendo per la virtualizzazione delle applicazioni.
Praticamente in Win7 PRO/ENT/ULTIMATE ci sarà un VirtualPc all'interno che faraà partire XP in modo silente e fara la presentazione a viseo con sotto il motore di XP.

Windows Server 2008 Foundation

Anche Microsoft si butta nel mercato dei servizi di base per le piccole reti. Oltre a SBS che porta in dote un sacco di applicativi oltre al sistema operativo Microsoft ha lanciato questa nuova versione di windows server 2008 dedicata alle piccole imprese. Infatti limita il numero degli utenti a 15, ma la cosa interessante è che non necessita di CAL per i client. La licenza è disponibile soltanto in modalità OEM e ha delle limitazioni Hw che riguardano i processori(1) e la RAM massima (8GB).

Dopo alcuni giorni esce anche la versione gratuita di ESX 3.5 update 4. Nella release notes si possono vedere i miglioramenti e i bug corretti in questa versione.

Intanto si apetta il 21 aprile, parole di rumors, dove vmware renderà disponibile vSphere, la nuova versione di ESX.

Hyper-V e Antivirus

Interessante articolo di Ben Armstrong su alcuni problemi quando si installa un antivirus nella parent partition di un server Windows Server 2008. Il controllo dei file e della loror creazione potrebbe influire sul funzionamento del hypervisor nel far partire le macchine virtuali o nella loro creazione. Come si raccomanda la parent partiton dovrebbe soltanto servire a gestire l'infrastruttura virtuale e il motore di virtualizzazione e non essere usata come server per vari servizi.

Nell'articolo si rimanda anche a un articolo della kb che dice come ovviare al problema escludendo alcune directory e processi dal controllo dell'antivirus.

SBS 2008 su vmware ESX 3.5

Oggi per fare dei test ho installato una macchina virtuale Small Business Server 2008 standard su un server ESX. Dopo la prima fase di isntallazione simile in tutto e per tutto a Windows Server 2008 al primo riavvio è partito il wizard di configrazione di SBS2008. Il wizard dopo il primo benvenuto si è immediatamente bloccato perchè non trovava la scheda di rete. I driver della scheda di rete sono all'interno dei Vmware Tools che si installano al primo riavvio della macchina virtuale.

Come si vede nell'immagine, fortunatamente, il setup propone di lanciare il setup dei driver de on si dispone dei driver stessi. Tramite il tasto Browse sono riuscito a lanciare l'installazione dei Vmware Tools e al riavvio è ripartito il Wizard senza problemi.

Cisco entra nel mercato server

Cisco entra nel mercato dei server. La notizia lanciata da molti siti spiega che cisco adesso nei datacenter oltre agli switch e ai router vuole inserire anche dei blade server. Tra i collaboratori c'è anche VmWare che tra poco rilascera la versione 4 di ESX dove all'interno come add-on si potra installare il modulo Nexus 1000-V che trasforma gli switch virtuali all'intero della Virtual Infrastucture swittch Cisco con il relatio IOS.

Staremo a vedere se questo porterà una rivoluzione soprattutto nei branch office e considerando il periodo di crisi.

Errore "Directory Services cannot start" on SBS2003

Mi sono trovato questo problema su un server con SBS installato in una piccola rete. Il server era stato configurato, ma non era stati impostati i salvataggi sel System State. Il problema era che il serevr dopo un primo avvio normale appena cercava di far partire il server direcoty si bloccava e si riavviava. l'unico modo per riuscire ad accedere al sistema era in modalità di rirpistino di AD.

Ho provato a seguire i passi descritti nella kb258064 per controllare i permessi NTFS sulla directory "C:\WINDOWS\NTDS", e controllare l'integrità del db ntds.dit tramite l'utility ntdsutil, ma il file era danneggiato.

Senza il backup del system state, l'unico modo per riportare ilserver a funzionamento è stato quello di forzare il demote del server senza la possibilità di comunicare con il servizio stesso, la ricreazione di un dominio di passaggio poi la relavita disinstallazione corretta e poi finalmente la ricostruzione del dominio così come deve essere.

per effettuare tutta l'operazione ho seguito la kb332199 e le seguenti operazioni

To remove Active Directory from a domain controller, follow these steps:
1. Restart the computer, and then press F8 to display the Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu.
2. Choose Directory Services Restore Mode, press ENTER, and then press ENTER again to continue restarting.
3. Modify the ProductType entry in the registry. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
b. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions
c. In the right-pane, double-click ProductType.
d. Type ServerNT in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note If this value is not set correctly or is misspelled, you may receive the following error message:
System Process - License Violation: The system has detected tampering with your registered product type. This is a violation of your software license. Tampering with product type is not permitted.
e. Quit Registry Editor.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Log on with the administrator account and password that is used for Directory Service Repair mode.

The computer will behave as a member server. However, there are still some remaining files and registry entries on the computer that are associated with the domain controller.
6. Start Registry Editor and locate the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters
If there is an entry for Src Root Domain Srv, right-click the value and then click Delete. This value must be deleted so that the domain controller sees itself as the only domain controller in the domain after promotion.
7. Remove the remaining files and registry entries. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Start the Active Directory Installation Wizard.
b. Install Active Directory to make the computer a domain controller for a new, temporary domain, such as "psstemp.deleteme."

Note Make sure that you make the computer a domain controller in a different forest.
c. After you install Active Directory, start the Active Directory Installation Wizard again, and then remove Active Directory from the domain controller.
8. After you remove Active Directory from a domain controller, remove metadata that is left in the domain. For more information about how to remove this metadata, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Essendo un server SBS dopo tutte queste impostazioni si deve anche reinstallare la parte di Exchange. Nel mio caso non è stato necessario in quanto non era impostato.

Outlook Express e firma HTML

Mi segno soltanto un appunto per un errore sciocco che ho riscontrato oggi: se si imposta la firma per un file html si deve controllare che il file html sia più piccolo di 4kb altrimenti si presenta un errore che la firma non pè aggiungibile perchè il file è troppo grande o rovinato.

Google spiega il down di Gmail. l'accesso era bloccato con un laconico "riprovare tra un po'" o non si arrivava nemmeno a login. Sui blog si legge che almeno l'accesso via IMAP era attivo.

Errore in Outlook 2007 0X8007000e

Oggi ho installato un Outlook standalone su un pc con XP che utilizzava Outlook Express per gestire la posta elettronica.
L'installazione non ha comportato nessun problema, nella prima esecuzione mi ha chiesto correttamente di importare le impostazione e i messaggi da altri programmi di posta elettronica. L'operazione è stata molto lunga in quanto la dimesione dei file di mail era di 2Gb. Finito l'importazione Outlook riportava l'errore 0X8007000E quando facevo Invia e Ricevi. Per risolvere il problema ho dovuto ricreare un nuovo profilo e configurare manualmente le impostazioni per l'Account della posta elettronica. Dopo questa operazione ho reimportato nuovamente la posta elettronica (questa volta dal file PST del vecchio profilo) e poi ho provveduto ad eliminarlo.

vCenter Converter 4

Finalmente è uscito la versione 4 (Build 146302) del Converter di vmware . Questa versione supporta tutti gli ultimi Sistemi Operativi quali Windows Server 2008, ma a differenza della versione 3 free supporta anche alcune distribuzioni linux (RedHat, Ubuntu, SUSE).
Ulteriore novità la possibilità di installare l'agent e la parte server su una macchina linux.

Ottimo Tool

Oggi ho scoperto questo interessante tool per catturare il traffico di rete. La sua caratteristica non sta in quello che fa, perchè è paraganabile a wireshark, ma è il Network Monitor di Microsoft che non ha bisogno di installazione, am si lancia solatanto un file eseguibile e lui crea un file con il traffico registrato.
Molto comodo per monitorare i pc remoti o senza la possibilità di installare il software/driver.

JeOS 8.10 on ESX 3.5

Oggi ho installato un server Ubuntu 8.10 su una server ESX. Ho installato la versione adatta a girare in ambiente virtuale.

Dopo aver creato la macchina virtuale con caratteristiche minime (512MbRAM, 8Gb HDU e 1 processore) sono partito con l'installazione. A differenza della versione 8.04 che aveva una ISO specifica la versione 8.10 di ubuntu Jeos si installa direttamente dalla ISO della versione server andanto a specificare con F4 prima di partire con l'instalazione la versione minimale per sistemi di virtualizzazione.

Dopo 5 minuti la macchina virtuale è pronta.

per l'installazione dei vmware-tools si deve aggiungere i seguenti pacchetti per permettere la compilazione:

sudo apt-get install build-essential psmisc linux-headers-$(uname -r)

una volta scaricati i pacchetti si può procedere con l'installazione e la compilazione dei vmware tools senza problemi.

Una cosa che ho notato è che in fase di installazione non richiede la modalità di configurazione dell'indirizzo IP della scheda di rete, ma in automatico va in modalità DHCP. Per modificare tale comportamento basterà modificare il file /etc/network/interface andando a modificare

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

in questo modo per poter assegnare un ip fisso

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

Oltre a questo si deve anche andare a modificare il file /etc/resolv.conf per andare ad impostare i server DNS.

Ora si può far ripartire il servizio di netwroking per utilizzare la nuova configurazione

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

leggo con piacere la notizia che finalmente è disponibile uan versione di VirtualCenter o come si chiama adesso vCenter Server per linux. Sono curioso di capire che db userà e come sarà compatibile con le vecchie versioni di ESX.
